Spicy Buffalo Tofu Bites

Updated: Feb 11, 2022

These mouth-watering Buffalo bites are extremely flavourful and super addictive. If you weren't a fan of tofu before, these are sure to change your mind! You can believe me when I say, you won't be able to stop eating them.

They can be served on salads, topped on pizzas, filled in wraps, stuffed in sandwiches or served as a side dish. The possibilities are endless. These bites are also delicious on their own without the buffalo sauce. But be careful not to eat them all before they hit the sauce!

See below for the recipe and cooking video.

Seasoned Tofu Bites

  • 1 Packs Firm/ Extra Firm Tofu

  • 1 1/2 - 2 tsp Salt

  • 1 tsp Onion Powder

  • 1 tsp Paprika

  • 2 tsp Parsley Flakes

  • 1 Tbl Minced Garlic

  • 1 cup Corn Starch

Buffalo Sauce

  • 1 Cup Hot Sauce

  • 3/4 Cup Coconut Oil

  • 2 Tbl Apple Cider Vinegar

  • 1 1/2 Tbl Paprika

  • 1/2- 1 tsp Vegan Worcestshire Sauce or sub for Soy Sauce

  • 1/2 tsp Garlic powder

  • 1/4 - 1/2 tsp Salt

For the Tofu Bites

  1. Remove tofu from it's packaging and drain the liquid. Then cut into slabs approx 1/2 inch to 1 inch thick.

  2. Press the slabs of tofu by laying a kitchen towel on a flat surface with absorbent paper towels on top with another kitchen towel. Then place your slabs of tofu in single rows on half of the kitchen towel. Fold over the towel and paper towel over the tofu and press firmly on each piece to remove the excess liquid. Note: Make sure not to press too hard that the tofu gets smashed.

  3. Remove the pressed tofu and stack on top each other. Then cut them into bite sized cubes. Place the cubed tofu into a mixing bowl then add the seasonings (excluding the corn starch).

  4. Gently toss the tofu using a spatula to properly incorporate the seasonings. Cover and place in the fridge for a few hours or overnight.

  5. Using a baking tray sprinkle corn starch on the tray, remove tofu from fridge and gently place the tofu onto the tray with corn starch. Toss the tofu to evenly coat with the corn starch, and shake off the excess.

  6. Add approximately 1 1/2 cups of coconut oil to a pan on medium to medium high heat. When the oil is properly heated and ready for frying (you can test by using the wooden spoon method; dip the handle of a wooden spoon into the oil. If the oil starts steadily bubbling, then the oil is hot enough for frying) gently add some of the battered tofu bites (make sure not to over crowd the pan).

  7. Fry the tofu until lightly golden brown and crispy.

  8. Remove from heat and place on paper towels or brown paper to absorb the excess oil.

  9. Repeat this process until all of the tofu is fried. Place the fried tofu into bowl and set aside until ready to toss with the Buffalo sauce.

For the Buffalo sauce

  1. Add all of the sauce ingredients to a deep pot on medium heat and allow to simmer, stirring occasionally for 5 -10 minutes.

  2. Remove from heat and pour some of the sauce over the fried tofu bites, and gently toss using a spatula to evenly coat the tofu. Add more sauce if needed or reserve the remainder for serving. You can also store the left overs in the fridge for next time.

Tasty Tip: You can whip up a quick "blue cheese" like dressing to pair with these Buffalo bites by simply combining vegan mayo, lemon juice, fresh chopped chive, onion powder, pinch salt and a few drops of agave.
